However, O’Connor has since clarified his statements, claiming that his comments were not meant to indicate that Halo 5 is actually in development for PC. Rather, he says that he was simply offering a noncommittal answer that didn’t rule out the possibility of Spartan Locke and Master Chief’s adventure coming to PC at some point down the road.

For now, Halo 5: Guardians will remain exclusive to Xbox, but it’s not surprising that O’Connor’s comments were taken so literally by the community. After all, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has insisted that Microsoft is dedicated to PC Gaming, and we saw evidence of that at this past year’s E3 event.

It was during the inaugural PC Gaming Show at E3 2015 that Phil Spencer came on stage to confirm that two major Xbox One exclusives were making the jump to PC, in the form of Killer Instinct and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. During the conference, the host actually pressed Spencer to confirm a PC release for Halo 5 as well, but Spencer stuck to his guns and insisted then that the game would remain exclusive to Xbox One.

However, with Microsoft’s renewed commitment to PC gaming through Windows 10, there’s a greater chance that Halo 5 will come to PC than there ever was for the previous games to be ported over. Microsoft seems keen on collecting the PC and Xbox gaming experiences under one umbrella, and bringing their biggest exclusive to PC would go a long way in accomplishing that goal.

That being said, the Xbox One is still struggling in sales when compared to the PlayStation 4. This holiday season marks the perfect opportunity for Microsoft to try to close some distance between the consoles, thanks to Sony’s biggest exclusives slipping to next year, and Halo 5 still primed and ready to drop in a couple of days time. By porting the game to PC, Microsoft would be compromising one of the biggest reasons to purchase an Xbox One over a PS4 this holiday.
